Normative sexual behavioral practices for adolescents are often difficult to define and assess. Youth experiencing commercial sexual exploitation often struggle to define and utilize personal sexual agency to develop sexual health. Informed by an ongoing research project, this presentation utilizes sexual agency to help assessors and providers engage youth and support their active involvement in their assessment and treatment planning. Sexual agency is defined as a youth’s ability to navigate the bodily concerns, personal values, family and social decisions related to their sexual agency. Participants will learn to design treatment strategies emphasizing sexual agencies, improving problem-solving skills, and matching sexual practices and beliefs with personal, family and community values. Youth victimized through commercial sexual exploitation experience a significant number of traumas and chronic stress during their lives before the commercial sexual exploitation. Commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) then creates an additional layer of complexity. The purpose of the presentation is to describe the complexity of trauma experienced by victims of CSE and the implication for treatment planning. The presentation utilizes a review of approximately 155 psychological evaluations to identify trauma, chronic stress, critical social history, and mental health symptoms for youth with complex trauma.
